Let’s talk about purpose shall we? Oh I know I know, – you already know your purpose right? Work. Going to the job daily to generate the bucks is not a purpose; it is a justification for going to work. Let me repeat so you understand- it is not the purpose of what you do. It seems to make sense and that is a logical thought process. I can kind of understand how that kind of thinking develops. But it is a huge error to think in that manner. This flawed thought process often leads to low morale and a lack of motivation. The powerful well of motivation is drained when you dont have a specific purpose. So you need to think about this.
So what is the absolute stone cold definition of purpose? As a motivational speaker the way I define purpose is the reason you are on here on the earth. Hmmm… deep!
So how the heck do you find your purpose anyway? It’s actually easy as pie. 1) Go to a temple somewhere in the world 2) Enter the temple 3) Ask for the wise man in the robes 4) Ask ” So what is my purpose master?” 5) Wait for it 6) Leave this place right away and apply it . O.K. I am just joking- its not that easy. There are a lot of twists and turns on your journey to finding your purpose. Now the bad news- it’s going to require some work and effort and study. After all you are trying to determine your life’s work. There are people that discover it by stumbling over it. I find that most folks though just have to work at it. Let me give you some techniques for fiinding it:
One sheet exercise- Take out a blank piece of paper. On that piece of paper, write down a list of all the things you are really good at and have been good at all your life. (This is not the time to be modest) You either know or have been told what you are good at all of your life. Once you have filled the page with talents or gifts, take a look at the page. Does anything stand out to you? Any common things? Let’s say your list is filled with things like writing, art, brainstorming, or painting. Maybe the central theme around the page is creativity and your purpose is to create as your contribution to the world.
Questions and Answers Grab your favorite pen or pencil and go somewhere where you can think. Go through and answer these questions: 1) What matters the most to you? Why? 2) Fill in the blank: I was put on the earth to _____________ 3) Do you think you have talents you were meant to use? Why? Are you using them? If not why not? 4) What are 2-3 things you have to get done in this lifetime? 5) At the end of my life what do I want to have accomplished? Once you have completed these questions you have some additional ideas about your purpose.
Take 10 Talk to 10 people that you really trust, and take yourself a little survey. ( Ok no cold feet- this takes some courage) The first question is “what do they think you were meant to do?” Ask cousin Freddy, the girlfriend, your Mom or crazy Uncle Lou. Ask a school buddy, a co worker. So why, oh why am I asking you to do this nutty activity? Becasue other people can see you in a different light. They can provide a different perpective. As the answers come flowing in you will have to evauate them and even edit them. As a word of caution try not to pick negative people. This process can help you get valuable information and be one step closer to your purpose.
